By now, every Singaporean should have already decided who they want to vote for. To each and all fellow Singaporeans, my best wishes to you as you play your part in our young nation's future.
As I went to the Polling Station this morning, I am both excited and yet concerned - Excited as I am part of perhaps a new chapter in the making of our nation; Concern because I am one of those who advocates for change and change as we all know holds the great unknown. The familiar questions and doubts of whether change is indeed good for our nation, wondering if the old adage of "If it isn't broken, don't try and fix it" still rings true and whether am I caught up in "Election Fever" and have not been objective in my personal evaluation of my life, my society and my nation. Still, when I reflect on other nations' history and the countless examples that change is part of life and growing up, I remain hopeful that my fellow Singaporeans will recognize this moment of our growing up for our nation.
My deed is done at 8:47am this morning and with my vote, holds my dreams and desire of a better Singapore. A Singapore where I can truly be proud of, where human kindness is a reality and not empty rhetorics, where we are a caring nation for the old, weak and needy. For one day, I know I will be one of them and when that time comes, I would be eternal grateful if my fellow Singaporean holds out his/her hand to me.
This election has been a personal awakening for me. It has changed me forever in ways I cannot describe. I used to be caught up with economic progress as well, and as recent as right before the start of the election campaigning. For once, I feel truly alive and holds deep compassion for my fellowman. It's a wonderful feeling and one that I will fight with all means to preserve.
A recently acquainted friend lead me to this piece by 101 East (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC-BBI5rmS4). For the 1st time in a long time, I teared to see a fellow Singaporean in his plight. This is why we MUST CHANGE.
May I live to see the Day where Our Singapore is truly "A Gracious Singapore".
Change should be a constant even it is not broken. With this spirit we progress otherwise we will still be living in caves. Change is always unknown but it may bring better things in life and that gives us hope and hope is the only key fuel in propelling any human being forward.
